What is a mindset? Or what is the mind? From the book Buddha’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness by Rick Hanson: if I may paraphrase the idea that your mind is what your brain does, just like moving is what your muscles do. Of course, with many more complex compartmental and specific biochemical and structural interactions and reactions.
Nonetheless, no, the mind is not an organ. This is also why Dr. Daniel Amen declares that psychiatry is the only medical specialty that doesn’t directly examine the organ it specializes in! He is changing that, and if you’ve ever listened to him speak, he does use nutritional interventions in a major way.
As well as “lifestyle” changes across the board, his treatment protocol is holistic and comprehensive. As a physician, he starts his assessment process with a brain scan: SPECT (Single-photon Emission Computed Tomography) to identify areas of the brain that are either too active or not active enough.
So, back and forth we go, looking for ways to improve brain physiology which will, in turn, improve brain function, which will, in turn, improve mindset.
A healthy mindset has the ability to be flexible, diverse, and responsive. It’s able to reply quickly or slowly depending on the circumstances and stay present within a complex reality.
The phrase ‘within me always’ represents a certain timeless, spaceless, and constant presence that’s always whole and clear in its intention.
So, whatever anyone prefers to name it, is fine. Some people call it “inner-faith” or “soul-music” or “earth-connection”. It’s awesome, no matter the name – what’s paramount is the experience we encounter. How consistent is this inner power, and how do we understand if we control it or not? Is there a cause-and-effect nature and, if so, in which direction?
This is life’s journey for each of us.
